● 책 소개
This book grew out of a multidisciplinary conference on “Continuity and Change in the Soviet Union since Stalin,” organized by the Indiana University Russian and East European Institute in 1978. The conference marked both the twenty-fifth anniversary of Stalin's death and the twentieth anniversary of the Institute.
In planning the conference and then this book, the editors attempted to draw upon the knowledge of leading scholars, most of them with firsthand experience in the Soviet Union or Eastern Europe. We asked of our authors that their contributions reflect the most recent scholarship in their respective fields, that they address the central question of continuity and change, and that they be accessible to nonspecialists as well as to other scholars. Otherwise, no effort was made to impose a single approach to the subject or a single interpretation of the twenty-five years since Stalin died. As a result, the essays gathered here reflect the great complexity of the post-Stalin era as well as differences of opinion among Western scholars about these developments. This is, we believe, as it should be. And while space limitations have constrained us in some respects, we have tried to insure that major trends and developments in the broad areas of politics, economics, society, culture, and foreign policy received appropriate attention.---from the inside of this book. ⓕ
