책 소개

This book is a sequel, a continuation of the story told in my Karl Marx's Theory of Revolution, Volume 3, “The ‘Dictatorship of the Proletariat.’ ” In KMTR 3,in accordance with the general plan of that work, I carried the account up through Marx and Engels themselves, that is, to 1895. But of course this was only the first chapter in the history of the phrase that later became so famous.
The phrase became world famous not because of its use by Marx or Engels but because of the role it played in the world revolutionary upsurge after the First World War and in the world Communist movement, particularly its use by the Russian Bolshevik government to describe its revolutionary state. It was put to two uses.
On the one hand, the word ‘dictatorship by itself had increasingly come to mean, since the latter part of the nineteenth century, some¬thing antidemocratic, the opposite of control by popular sovereignty. By this time the counterposition of the terms ‘dictatorship’ and democracy, had only recently become possible, though this counterposition was not yet as clear-cut as it later became. The term ‘dictatorship’ still trailed some of its previous history, which we will review in Chapter 1. Still, the relatively new denotation of‘dictatorship’ was strong enough to provide the international anti-Soviet campaign with added material to depict the Russian Revolution as simply the imposition of a new despotism over the country. (You see, they themselves admit that it’s a dictatorship!)
